Maltipoo
The Maltipoo inherits the affectionate nature of the Maltese and the intelligence of the Toy Poodle. Gentle, playful and virtually non-shedding — an excellent choice for people with mild allergies.

Temperament
The Maltipoo combines the sweetness and emotional attachment of the Maltese with the intelligence and sociability of the Toy Poodle. The result is an especially affectionate, patient dog that is centred on its family, developing an intense bond with its caregivers and responding very well to positive reinforcement. It is an ideal breed for seniors due to its size, balanced temperament and moderate activity level, as well as for families with children and for those seeking an urban companion that can travel. As with any crossbreed, there is individual variability: some puppies take more after the Maltese (very attached, less obedient) and others after the Poodle (more independent, more trainable). We socialise puppies from the earliest weeks to reduce the tendency towards separation anxiety, which is common in the maternal line.
Care
The Maltipoo's coat is usually wavy or curly, with very little visible shedding — one of the reasons for its popularity. It requires brushing three to four times a week with a long-pin brush and comb, paying special attention to the ears, armpits and groin — the areas most prone to matting. Professional grooming is done every six to eight weeks to maintain the length and shape of the cut. Bathing is done every three to four weeks with a gentle shampoo, specifically for white hair if applicable. Ears should be checked weekly due to hair in the ear canal. Nails are trimmed every three to four weeks. At our kennel in Dénia we accustom puppies to brushing, the grooming table and the dryer from five weeks of age, to reduce stress during their first visits to the professional groomer.
Adult size
The Maltipoo is a crossbreed and therefore has no FCI standard. Adult size depends on the specific cross: Maltese × Toy Poodle parents produce F1 generations with an approximate adult weight of 2.5 to 5 kg and a height at the withers of 20 to 30 cm. F1b litters (backcross with Toy Poodle) tend to have curlier coats and less shedding. We always provide the weight of both parents to give guidance on the puppy's expected size, although it is impossible to guarantee an exact figure due to the variability inherent in crossbreeding. We do not breed "tea cup" lines or specimens below a reasonable health range.
Family life
It is an excellent breed for seniors in an urban setting due to its size, reduced shedding and emotional bond. It also fits well with families with children over six years old, provided they are taught not to pick it up roughly. It coexists without issue with other small dogs and cats if introduced from puppyhood. It adapts perfectly to flat living due to its size and moderate activity level, needing two to three daily walks. We serve families and seniors in Dénia, Valencia, Alicante, Benidorm and Murcia, many of them in urban flats or townhouses. The critical point for this breed is separation anxiety: it does not cope well with being left alone for many hours, and it is advisable to work on independence from puppyhood.
History and origin
The Maltipoo is a designer breed that emerged in the United States in the late 1990s, when crossing Poodles with companion breeds became popular to obtain dogs with reduced shedding and a family-oriented temperament. It is not recognised by the FCI or traditional kennel clubs (AKC, RSCE). It does appear in specific crossbreed registries such as the Designer Breed Registry or the DDKC for traceability purposes, but without official FCI pedigree. We are transparent about this: what we offer is a documented cross between a Maltese and a Toy Poodle, with traceability of both parents and a health protocol equivalent to that of our FCI breeds. We breed Maltipoos at our kennel in Dénia with parents from known lines and up-to-date health tests.
Nutrition
A high-quality kibble formulated for toy or mini breeds is recommended, with animal protein as the first ingredient and small kibble size. Puppies eat three to four times daily until six months of age; adults eat twice a day. Sharing a predisposition with its parent breeds, the Maltipoo is prone to hypoglycaemia as a puppy and to obesity as an adult, so portions are weighed and treats are limited. It is also advisable to monitor tear staining, typical of the Maltese line: a balanced diet and filtered water help reduce stains on the white facial hair.
Breed-specific health
As an F1 cross, the Maltipoo may inherit risks from both parents: patellar luxation and cardiac conditions from the Maltese side, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), Legg-Calvé-Perthes and dental problems from the Poodle side. Hybrid vigour tends to statistically reduce the incidence compared to purebreds, but does not eliminate the risks. We work with parent dogs that have up-to-date PRA genetic testing, patellar assessment and cardiac auscultation, and we schedule annual check-ups. Each puppy is delivered with an official veterinary booklet, microchip, vaccinations and deworming up to date, and a breed-specific initial assessment of patellae, eyes and heart. Full details of our health protocol and guarantees can be found on the relevant page of this site.

More questions? Write to us- Is the Maltipoo really hypoallergenic?
-
The Maltipoo is considered one of the crossbreeds with the lowest allergenic load due to its reduced shedding and wavy or curly coat, but no breed is completely hypoallergenic: there is always the presence of dander and saliva. F1b generations (higher proportion of Poodle) are usually better tolerated than F1. If there is a confirmed allergy in the household, we recommend a trial cohabitation period before booking to validate individual tolerance.
- How often does a Maltipoo need a haircut?
-
Every 4 to 6 weeks of professional grooming, depending on the desired length. The most popular cut is the "teddy bear", which keeps the coat uniform at about 3-4 cm and highlights the rounded expression of the face. Between cuts, it is important to brush 3-4 times a week with a long-pin comb to prevent matting, especially behind the ears, in the armpits and around the harness area. When we deliver the puppy, we guide the family on brushing routine, products and appropriate bathing frequency for their coat type.
- How long does a Maltipoo live?
-
The Maltipoo has a life expectancy of between 12 and 16 years, with cases exceeding 17 under optimal conditions. The genetics of the parents, weight management, dental health, and regular cardiac and eye check-ups are the factors that most influence their longevity. A Maltipoo at a healthy weight with a proper health protocol easily reaches 14 years.
- Is the Maltipoo good with children?
-
Yes, as long as children understand its fragility. We recommend cohabitation with children from six years of age onwards, who are able to understand that the dog should not be picked up roughly. At our kennel in Dénia, we socialise the puppy from the third week, which facilitates adaptation to the home. Due to its affectionate and patient character, it fits especially well in homes with a stable routine.
- Is the Maltipoo suitable for elderly people?
-
Yes, it is one of the most recommended crossbreeds for elderly people. Its small size, affectionate and patient temperament, low shedding and moderate activity level fit very well with a senior lifestyle. The point to work on is separation anxiety: if the person spends many hours away from home or travels frequently without the dog, it is advisable to consider this carefully before booking.
- Where to buy a Maltipoo in Dénia?
-
