Temperament

The Pomapoo inherits a temperament that combines the liveliness and alertness of the Pomeranian with the intelligence and sociability of the Toy Poodle. The typical result is a cheerful, curious dog that bonds very closely with its family, with a good disposition for learning and a high need for companionship. As with any crossbreed, there is individual variability within each litter: some puppies take more after the Pomeranian parent (watchful, alert barker) and others after the Toy Poodle (calmer, more obedient). We accustom our puppies to handling, noise and interaction with children from the earliest weeks to ensure a well-balanced dog regardless of genetic bias. It is a breed suited to active families, seniors and urban living.

Care

The Pomapoo's coat is usually intermediate between the dense double coat of the Pomeranian and the continuously growing curly coat of the Toy Poodle, tending to shed less than a purebred Pomeranian. We recommend brushing three to four times a week with a long-pin brush and comb to prevent matting, especially around the ears and armpits. Depending on the puppy's coat type, professional grooming may be needed every eight to ten weeks. Bathing is done every four to six weeks with a gentle shampoo. The ears, due to their size and partially drooping pinna, should be checked weekly. Nails are trimmed every three to four weeks. At our kennel in Dénia we accustom puppies to brushing, the dryer, and ear and nail handling from five weeks of age.

Adult size

The Pomapoo is a crossbreed and therefore has no FCI standard. Adult size depends on the specific cross: Pomeranian × Toy Poodle parents produce F1 generations with an approximate adult weight of 2.5 to 5 kg and a height at the withers of 20 to 28 cm. F1b litters (backcross with Toy Poodle) tend to have curlier coats and slightly more consistent size. We always provide the weight of both parents to give guidance on the puppy's expected size, although it is impossible to guarantee an exact figure due to the variability inherent in crossbreeding. We do not breed "tea cup" lines or specimens outside a reasonable range.

Family life

It fits well with families with children over six years old, provided they are taught not to pick it up roughly. It coexists without issue with other small dogs and cats if introduced from puppyhood. It is a breed suited to flat living due to its size and reduced shedding, with the caveat that it may inherit the Pomeranian's alert barking, so it is advisable to work on bark management and alone-time tolerance from puppyhood. We serve families in Dénia, Valencia, Alicante, Benidorm and Murcia, many of them in flats. It needs two to three daily walks plus moderate mental stimulation.

History and origin

The Pomapoo is a designer breed that emerged in the United States from the late 1990s, when the trend of crossing Poodles with other breeds aimed to combine temperament and reduced shedding. It is not recognised by the FCI or traditional kennel clubs (AKC, RSCE), but it does appear in specific crossbreed registries such as the Designer Breed Registry or DDKC (Designer Dogs Kennel Club) for traceability purposes. We are transparent about this: a Pomapoo is not a standardised breed — it is a crossbreed with documented genetic traceability of the parents. We breed Pomapoos at our kennel in Dénia with parents from known lines and up-to-date health tests.

Nutrition

A high-quality kibble formulated for toy or mini breeds is recommended, with animal protein as the first ingredient and small kibble size. Puppies eat three to four times daily until six months of age; adults eat twice a day. Sharing a genetic predisposition with its parent breeds, the Pomapoo is prone to hypoglycaemia as a puppy and to obesity as an adult, so portions are weighed and excessive treats are avoided. Fresh water should always be available.

Breed-specific health

As an F1 cross, the Pomapoo may inherit risks from both parents: patellar luxation and tracheal collapse from the Pomeranian side, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA) and Legg-Calvé-Perthes from the Poodle side. The heterosis effect (hybrid vigour) tends to statistically reduce the incidence of certain conditions compared to purebreds, but does not eliminate them. We work with parent dogs that have up-to-date PRA genetic testing and patellar assessment, use a harness instead of a collar from puppyhood, and schedule annual ophthalmological and orthopaedic check-ups. Each puppy is delivered with an official veterinary booklet, microchip, vaccinations, deworming up to date and a breed-specific initial assessment. Frequently asked questions

01
What will my Pomapoo's coat be like as an adult?

It depends on the genetic proportion inherited from each parent. The range goes from straight and dense coat (more Pomeranian) to curly and low-shedding (more Poodle), with wavy being the most common in F1 crosses. The puppy coat changes between 6 and 8 months, when the puppy coat sheds and the final texture appears. For each litter we inform about the coat type of both parents to guide the family, although the final result is only confirmed with the coat change.

02
Does a Pomapoo shed a lot?

It depends on the specific genetics of the puppy. The Pomapoo typically sheds less than a purebred Pomeranian thanks to the Poodle component, but it is not completely hypoallergenic: there is always dander and saliva. F1b generations (with a higher proportion of Poodle) tend to shed less. If there is a confirmed allergy in the household, we recommend a trial cohabitation period before booking to validate individual tolerance.

03
How long does a Pomapoo live?

The Pomapoo has a life expectancy of between 12 and 16 years, in line with its parent breeds. The genetics of the parents, weight management, dental health and regular eye and orthopaedic check-ups are the factors that most influence their longevity. A Pomapoo at a healthy weight with a proper health protocol easily reaches 14 years.

04
What is an F1 Pomapoo and an F1b?

An F1 Pomapoo is a first-generation cross between a purebred Pomeranian and a purebred Toy Poodle. An F1b is a backcross of an F1 Pomapoo with a Toy Poodle, seeking a higher genetic proportion of Poodle — curlier coat, less shedding.

05
Is the Pomapoo good with children?

Yes, as long as children understand its fragility. We recommend cohabitation with children from six years of age onwards, who are able to understand that the dog should not be picked up roughly. At our kennel in Dénia, we socialise the puppy from the third week, which facilitates adaptation to the home and reduces later reactivity.

06
